The Transportation Bureau Is Carrying out Improvement Works to 3 Bus Stops (6 Bus Shelters) on Minzu Rd. to Respond to Population Aging; Careful Driving Around Work Sites is Required

In response to population aging, the Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government is improving the bus waiting environment at current bus stops built on refuge islands. Specifically, improvement works are carried out to a total of 3 bus stops (6 bus shelters), namely Wanzihnei, Longfong temple, and Minzu Dashun Rd. Intersection, on Minzu 1st Rd. The work is scheduled to be completed in June 2020 and is expected to bring safety, comfort, and friendliness to passengers.
There are several issues caused by existing bus stops on Minzu Rd.: a lack of complete and barrier-free foot traffic flow on refuge islands due to obstacles such as trees and facilities; difficulty in getting on and off the bus due to the height of the waiting platforms; and unsatisfactory passages that passengers have to cross motorcycle lanes from sidewalks to bus stops. The Transportation Bureau has actively taken on renewal works on bus waiting areas of 3 bus stops (6 bus shelters) on Minzu Rd.
The Transportation Bureau stated that Minzu Rd. is the main road running north and south with old communities surrounding each bus stop along the route. With high popularity density, high demand for bus services, and high traffic volume, it is challenging to carry out works in those areas. Due to the need for bus services during the construction, a temporary platform has been set up for each bus stop. Traffic cones, cone connectors, and warning signs are also placed around the sites.
Concerning the improvement works, the Transportation Bureau pointed out that previous bus stop components such as platforms and railings were removed at the end of March. At the beginning of April, guide walls and curbs were constructed; currently, the curb setting for southbound stops is completed. The construction of the guide wall and curb for northbound stops and the installation of traffic signals and light poles will be carried out this week. Then, paving, bus shelters, ramps, railings, warning facilities, and lighting will be installed. The works are carried out according to the schedule and are ahead of schedule. New bus stops will be opened for use by the end of June.
The Transportation Bureau spends considerable time carrying out improvement works to provide citizens with a bus waiting environment with better quality. Road users should slow down when passing those work sites, and drivers have to drive carefully.
