Kaohsiung YouBike 2.0 in Qishan and Meinong is officially launched

Since its launch in July, Kaohsiung’s YouBike 2.0 public bike transport system has an accumulated use of nearly 3.5 million people and earned the public’s recognition. The Meinong and Qishan areas did not have public bicycle services, so the Transportation Bureau set up stations in these areas for the first time on November 28, 2020, to provide people with new travel options.
Director Chang Shu-juan of the Transportation Bureau stated that YouBike 2.0 docking stations require no electricity nor network and can be fast and flexibly deployed. Director Chang further said that the new stations that are open for use this week are in Qishan (Qishan Transfer Station, Qishan Old Street, also known as Huazhong Street, and other stations) and Meinong (the Meinong Branch of Kaohsiung City Library, Shuangfeng Park parking lot, etc.), all of which were places where bike services were not available. People are able to ride YouBike 2.0 bikes to explore Qishan Old Street, Meinong Lake, and other areas, making sightseeing and travel more convenient and accessible.
Kaohsiung YouBike 2.0 bikes are regularly maintained to keep them in good condition and provide riders comfortable experiences. Riders can directly borrow and return them using the solar-powered panels mounted on the bicycles. The stations allow multiple people to borrow and return bikes at the same time without the need to queue at the center console. Moreover, riders can borrow bikes by scanning electronic cards, such as icash and iPASS, or using smartphones to scan the QR Code. Registration is no longer limited to a single card. Each person can register up to 5 cards. The bicycles feature a three-stage internal transmission, with an intuitive and easy design that allows riders to use one hand to adjust bike saddles.
To encourage the use of green transportation, the city government will provide citizens with free rides for the first 30 minutes before March 31, 2021. From April 1, 2021, the city government will pay NT$5 for the first 30 minutes while riders pay the rest of NT$5. Riders who use iPASS for two-way transfer between public bicycles and other services, including MRT, light rail, bus, ferry, and Taiwan Railway (one-way: Taiwan Railway to YouBike), will receive discounts according to the types of tickets. In principle, an additional transfer subsidy of NT$5 will be given per rider per time. In addition, riders who use MeNGo regular tickets can enjoy free rides for the first 30 minutes for unlimited times. The goal is to provide seamless transfer experiences for last-mile connectivity by combining various public transportation modes.
