“A Full Upgrade!” Kaohsiung City Public Bike to Be Fully Upgraded to System 2.0 on July 1

The Kaohsiung City Government announced that the City Government collaborates with YouBike company to fully upgrade Kaohsiung City Public Bike to system 2.0, which is scheduled to be launched officially on July 1, 2020. The system 2.0 features lightweight docking stations that can be flexibly deployed and require no electricity. Moreover, the system allows more bikes to be available for use, provides citizens with convenient and comfortable rides, and offers an easier method to pick up and return the bikes.
The press conference on the contract signing of the Kaohsiung YouBike 2.0 Public Bike System was held at Fongshan Administration Center on April 7. Kaohsiung City Mayor Han Kuo-Yu and YouBike executive director Liu Li-Jhu co-convened the press conference and announced that public bikes in Kaohsiung City will be fully upgraded to the system 2.0 on July 1.
Mayor Han noted that YouBike, a subsidiary of Giant, is the glory of Taiwan and globally known for its R&D and manufacturing technology of bicycles. With considerable experience in the operation of public bike systems in seven counties/cities in Taiwan, YouBike will introduce a brand-new public bike service, the Kaohsiung YouBike 2.0 Public Bike System, and provides Kaohsiung citizens with seamless services on July 1.
The Director-General of Transportation Bureau Cheng Yung-Hsiang pointed out that the Bureau actively examined how each county/city operates the public bike system in order to further improve the quality of public bike services in Kaohsiung. The tender of the system upgrade required service providers to manage their own profits and losses and provide seamless services. The purpose is to encourage the service providers to actively enhance operational performance, introduce new technology such as mobile payment, and provide high-quality bike rental services. In the end, YouBike won the online open tender.
Director-General Cheng stated that YouBike will introduce the state-of-the-art “Kaohsiung YouBike 2.0 Public Bike System.” The system comes with lightweight docks that do not need electricity, and the size of the docking stations can be flexible. The docking stations will overcome the difficulty of finding suitable locations in the past and make the deployment more convenient in limited urban spaces. Moreover, rental stations can operate once installed without a month-long process of applying for electricity.
As the Kaohsiung City Government supports the global efforts that put into energy conservation and carbon reduction and strives to cut air pollution, the Environmental Protection Bureau launched Kaohsiung Public Bike (CityBike) on March 1, 2009. The system has been running for over 11 years, so the expansion of locations is difficult, and the bikes and station facilities are obsolete and need to be replaced. As the original contract will expire on June 30, 2020, the City Government has handed the operation of Kaohsiung Public Bike to the Transportation Bureau in order to integrate the public transportation service of the whole city. The Bureau has put the service out to open tender, and the process has been completed.
The Transportation Bureau explained that the Kaohsiung YouBike 2.0 Public Bike System allows users to directly pick up and return bikes using the solar-powered display on the smart bikes. In other words, citizens do not need to line up at the kiosk as each docking station allows many people to pick up and return bikes at the same time. Users can rent the bikes by either using iPass/EasyCard or scanning QR code and may register up to five iPass/EasyCard for one account rather than one card. In addition, the saddle height of the three-speed bikes can be easily adjusted with one hand, providing users with intuitive and convenient biking experience.
