Transportation Bureau Engages Citizens in Discussion of Traffic Planning of Kaohsiung Main Station

【Kaohsiung News】To engage citizens in the discussion of the permanent road planning around Kaohsiung Main Station, the Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government held Citizens' Voice on July 31 and live streamed it on the official Facebook account. The City Government invited 30 participants, including citizens, public representatives, and people from the industry, government agencies, and academia, to the event, where they suggested adopting a people-centered design to optimize pedestrian traffic and create an accessible environment around the station area.
Taking place in the Intelligent Transportation Center of the Transportation Bureau, the Citizens' Voice was conducted in the form of a relaxing citizen café, where participants had a group discussion on the traffic planning around Kaohsiung Main Station after the railway systems were moved underground. The event embodies the spirit of civic engagement, and the opinions gathered here would serve as an important reference for the City Government for future policy-making.
According to the Transportation Bureau, Jhandong Road will be completed and open to traffic in September 2022, and the entire station area will be completed in 2024. By then, Jhandong Road, Jhansi Road, bike-friendly lanes, and the commercial buildings and hotels around the station will together form a business complex.
In addition, Jhongshan Road and Boai Road, which connects to the station southward and northward, respectively, will be modified based on the Kaohsiung Omotesando Project. Kaohsiung Main Station will have a brand-new look as a "Station City."
In the event, topics of group discussion covered "traffic planning inside and outside the station area," "suggestion on transfer routes in the station area," and "the creation of a people-centered environment in the station area". Participants shared their visions for the future, proposing an idea of building circular roads in the station areas, improving the connectivity among different types of transportation services for passenger convenience, optimizing pedestrian traffic flow, and creating an accessible environment based on a people-centered design.
Other issues that the participants also cared about include "the optimization of the southward and northward Zhongshan Road and Baoai Road and the pedestrian space in the station area," "the promotion of commercial activities in the surrounding area after the completion of the station area," "more greenery sites in the station area," and "the improvement of the overall route markings and the addition of English translations."
Director-General Chang Shu-chuan said that engaging citizens in the discussion helped inspire more and better ideas about the traffic planning of the station area. It also helped increase public recognition toward the planning and realize civic engagement. Opinions given by the public will serve as an important reference for the City Government for future policy-making.
