Early Completion of A Thousand YouBike 2.0 Stations in Kaohsiung – Greatest Number of Stations in Taiwan with Coverage Extended to NUK

Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government has worked with the YouBike team since 2020 to create the YouBike 2.0 public bike share system (PBS) in full swing. Today (August 30), Director-General Shu-Chuan Chang of Transportation Bureau, President Yueh-Tuan Chen of National University of Kaohsiung (NUK), and YouBike’s General Manager John Ho attended the inauguration event of the 1,000th YouBike 2.0 station at the Administration Building of NUK. They gladly announced the early completion of 1,000 rental stations in the city originally scheduled for the end of the year!
Kaohsiung YouBike 2.0 PBS adopts an off-power light dock system, with more densely located and accessible stations that are flexibly set up throughout the city. The number of rental stations in remote areas increased greatly from 85 under the former City Bike system to 294 now. Since the commencement of operation in last year, the goal of building 1,000 stations originally scheduled for the end of 2021 has been completed early on August 30 under the sedulous efforts of the Transportation Bureau and the YouBike team to construct the system. To date, Kaohsiung has become the city with the greatest number of YouBike 2.0 stations in Taiwan.
Director-General Chang of Transportation Bureau said in the NUK station inauguration event that YouBike 2.0 has established 9 rental stations in the NUK campus under the keen request of NUK’s President Chen. NUK ranked high in terms of the number of users among Kaohsiung colleges and universities, meaning that YouBike has become an important transportation tool for the students’ daily commuting, especially the last-mile transfer from the MRT station. This day, the inauguration of the 1,000th station in NUK marked a meaningful milestone for the system.
Not just NUK is a “green university demo school”, said President Chen of NUK, but she herself is also a big fan of YouBike. She is glad that NUK has become the 1,000th YouBike 2.0 station. She gave special thanks to the Transportation Bureau and the Lantian Village Office for their assistance and invited Vice President of Administration Affairs Tsung-Fang Wu, Dean of General Affairs Shih-Heng Tung, and Chief Secretary Shing-Tai Pan to co-host the inauguration of the 1,000th station. Together with the students, they also rode around the campus on YouBike.
Users have to pay $5 for Kaohsiung YouBike 2.0 for the first 30 minutes, with an additional $5 being subsidized by the city government. iPass users enjoy an additional two-way discount of $5 per trip for MRT/LRT/bus/ferry transfer to/from the PBS system (and for one-way transfer from TRA train to YouBike). Also, MeNGo monthly pass users are entitled to unlimited free rides for the first 30 minutes.
In addition, in expectation of the September 1 back-to-school day, the city government has offered free ride privilege for high school students as well starting from August 25, to encourage students to use YouBike and help them develop a habit of using green transportation. Senior high school students or below registered in Kaohsiung City and holding a Digital Student ID iPass Card, Kaohsiung iPass Student ID Card or Kaohsiung Children iPass Card are entitled to a first 30-minute free ride for renting Kaohsiung YouBike 2.0, so as to encourage students to use the more eco-friendly and convenient transportation tool.
