Kaohsiung Tourism Taxi Driver Training Provides Excellent Tours and Improves Kaohsiung’s Soft Power

On November 7, the Transportation Bureau, Kaohsiung City Government, completed 250 tourism taxi driver training certifications. In addition to Kaohsiung City’s radio and satellite dispatch fleets, personal taxi drivers also joined the training for the first time this year, becoming members of Kaohsiung City’s first line in the sightseeing vanguard and contributing to the effort to introduce every part of Kaohsiung City’s beautiful landscape.

Ching-Fu Chen, Director-General of the Transportation Bureau, indicated that the Bureau has held three training sessions since the tourism taxi training began in 2012. The number of tourism taxi drivers has increased continually from the first batch of 122 to this year’s 250. Drivers participating in the training must possess a new car purchased within the previous five years and must not have had their licenses suspended, revoked, or cancelled within the previous three years. They must also undergo training exams and be granted licenses by the Transportation Bureau. Drivers must pass through layers of checkpoints and screenings before becoming Kaohsiung tourism taxi drivers.

In recent years, Kaohsiung City has spared no effort to promote cruise tourism. This year, 50 international cruise ships have moored at the Port of Kaohsiung. Each of these ships has held an average of more than 3000 international travelers. Tourism taxis are often in short supply when cruise ships are moored. This indicates that tourism taxis already possess a certain market size. Opportunities for the Kaohsiung tourism taxi industry have been created successfully.

The Transportation Bureau indicated that to protect the rights and interests of tourists, in addition to announcing an upper limit of NT$2400 per half day (NT$500 added for every hour after 4 hours) for tourism taxi charter rates, in response to the positioning of 2014 as the year of international tourism and the substantial growth in the number of international cruise arrivals, the tourism taxi rates at the service cruise dock area have been set to NT$400 per hour in urban areas and NT$500 per hour in non-urban areas (former Kaohsiung County) to increase tourism quality.
