Kaohsiung Announces 2021 CNY Traffic Relief Plans and Traffic Control Measures around Tourist Attractions, Encouraging the Use of Public Transportation

Kaohsiung News
To reduce traffic congestion around tourist attractions during the seven-day Chinese New Year holiday, the Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government has drawn up 2021 Chinese New Year Traffic Relief Plans and set up the Chinese New Year Traffic Information Zone on its official website at https://traffic.tbkc.gov.tw/. The public is encouraged to visit the website to check real-time traffic information of tourist attractions before traveling, including shuttle bus and traffic control information.
The Chinese New Year holiday this year lasts seven days from February 10 to 16. The public can park at public on-street and off-street parking lots for free during the four days from the Chinese New Year’s Eve to the third day of the Chinese New Year (not including parking towers and outsourced parking lots). A surcharge of NTD 50 per ride will be added to the charge-by-meter taxi fare from 00:00 on February 7 to 24:00 on February 16.
To improve traffic flows around public transportation stations, enhanced traffic relief measures will be carried out around Kaohsiung Main Station and HSR Zuoying Station. To reduce traffic congestion around major tourist attractions such as Sizhi Bay, Hamasen, Pier-2 Art Center, Cijin, Shoushan, Fo Guang Shan Monastery, EDA Outlet Mall, Cishan, Meinong, and Gangshan Skywalk, the public is encouraged to check traffic relief information and use public transportation.
In terms of traffic control, the section of Da Yong Road within the Pier-2 Art Center area is restricted to pedestrians only (local residents are not subject to this restriction). A two-stage traffic control will be implemented in Cijin area. From 11:00 to 17:00 from February 10 to 16, gas-powered scooters are not allowed on-board the ferries travelling between Cijin and Gushan (not including scooters of Cijin residents, official scooters, and electric scooters used by tourists).
To reduce traffic congestion in Yan Cheng District and Hamasen caused by the surge in visitors and vehicles to Pier-2 and Kaohsiung Port Warehouses, the Transportation Bureau has planned an alternative route, which runs from Gushan 1st Road or Cisian 3rd Road to Dagong Road before connecting to Jhongjheng 4th Road via Jhong Jheng Bridge. The public can take the alternative route by following guide signs along the way to avoid traffic jam and shorten travel time.
The Da Nan Loop of the Light Rail Transit has been in operation since January 12, 2021. With 23 stops, the loop starts from Kaisyuan Park in the east and terminates at Gushan District Office in the west. The public can park at the Singuang Public Parking Lot next to the Software Technology Park (C7) and take the light rail to Pier-2. They can also take the light rail to Wenwu Temple and transfer to bus No. 56 to Shoushan Zoo.
Parking is challenging around tourist attractions in Kaohsiung during long holidays. To promote the use of public transportation to travel, the Transportation Bureau has planned the use of the “MRT+shuttle bus” travel mode to go to tourist attractions in the city, showing the public where to park around MRT stations (see attached pictures) and how to take MRT or shuttle buses to tourist attractions without traffic congestion. It also encourages the public to use e-tickets to transfer among bus rides or between different forms of public transportation for discounted fares.
In light of traffic congestion around tourist attractions in the city, the Transportation Bureau urges the public to check real-time traffic status and information of tourist attractions on its official website. The public can also listen to the Police Broadcasting Service and download and use Easy Parking in Kaohsiung App for parking information of tourist attractions. The Transportation Bureau wishes the public a wonderful holiday and a safe journey home.
