Parking Lots with Disability-Friendly Emblems Provide Parking Discounts to Disabled Customers

【Kaohsiung News】 In compliance with the advocacy by the Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government, people with disabilities can now enjoy free parking for the first four hours per parking on the same day or a 50% discount on flat and monthly parking rates for 104 parking lots at shopping malls, department stores, art and cultural facilities, sports facilities, public transportation stations, schools, and hospitals. Disability-friendly emblems are posted at these parking lots for people with disabilities to identify.

In less than six months, the Transportation Bureau has completed the accessibility improvement at over 1,000 publicly and privately operated and legal off-street parking lots in Kaohsiung by the end of this March, enabling people with disabilities or mobility impairments to access parking lots more safely and operate pay stations more conveniently.

Since 2011, public parking lots governed by the Transportation Bureau have been providing parking discounts to people with disabilities. From late 2020, in compliance with the advocacy of the Transportation Bureau, public parking lots governed by internal and external agencies of the city government and some private parking lots have also been providing parking discounts to the said group. Currently, there are another 104 parking lots providing such discounts, including those at shopping malls (Carrefour, IKEA, etc.), department stores (Hanshin Arena Shopping Plaza, Hanshin, Shin Kong Mitsukoshi, SOGO, Mega City, E-Da Outlet Mall, etc.), art and cultural facilities (Da Dong Art Center, Weiwuying National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, etc.), sports facilities (Kaohsiung International Swimming Pool, Jhongjheng Stadium, etc.), public transportation stations (THSR Zuoying Station, Fengshan Railway Station, etc.), schools (National Sun Yat-sen University, Sanmin Vocational High School of Home Economics & Commerce, etc.), and hospitals (Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, etc.).

According to the Transportation Bureau, discount schemes vary among parking lots, but most of them provide free parking for the first four hours per parking on the same day or a 50% discount on flat and monthly parking rates.

The Transportation Bureau launches disability-friendly emblems to be posted at visible locations, such as parking lot entrances, parking rate signs, and pay stations, so that people with disabilities can readily identify them. The Transportation Bureau appreciates these parking lot operators for fulfilling their corporate social responsibility and expects more operators to follow.
