Kaohsiung YouBike 2.0 Saves a lot for Students and Offers Discounts to Transfer Commuters

“The best option for commuter students!” Kaohsiung City Government has announced that students of senior high schools (senior vocational schools) and lower level educational institutions in Kaohsiung can use the YouBike 2.0 rental service for free for the first 30 minutes with their iPASS Digital Student ID Card, iPASS Kaohsiung Student ID Card or Children Card. In addition, transfer discounts are offered to passengers who rent a public bike and transfer to designated transports and vice versa, saving Kaohsiung people’s money quite a lot!

The stations of Kaohsiung YouBike 2.0 public bike rental system are established with location flexibility, which are closer to the public with a denser network and a light-pile system that requires no electricity is used. Through active efforts of the Transportation Bureau and the YouBike team, the goal of 1,000 stations has been achieved ahead of schedule at the end of August this year. Currently, 1,027 rental stations have been established.

In addition, the cumulative number of users has exceeded 10 million as of August 2021, showing that Kaohsiung residents love YouBike 2.0 public bike service, which has become the best transportation option for commuters and commuter students nowadays.

Rental stations have been set up in all major transportation stations in the city to provide last mile services for people relying on public transportation such as MRT, light rail, bus, ferry and Taiwan Railway. The Transportation Bureau also offers various transfer discounts on public transportation for YouBike users to ease their burdens.

Kaohsiung City Government provides a subsidy of NT$ 5 to Kaohsiung YouBike 2.0 users for the first 30 minutes and users only need to afford NT$ 5 themselves. For public bike users who transfer to MRT, light rail, bus, ferry and Taiwan Railway (one way: transfer from Taiwan Railway to YouBike) with an electronic ticket and vice versa, transfer discounts are offered based on ticket types. In principle, a subsidy of NT$ 5 is offered to a transfer passenger per use. Users can also rent a bike for free for the first 30 minutes with a MeNGo monthly pass.

To encourage students to make good use of the service and get used to green transportation, the city government has also announced that starting from August to the end of December 2022, students of senior high schools (senior vocational schools) and lower level educational institutions in Kaohsiung can use the YouBike 2.0 rental service for free for the first 30 minutes with their iPASS Digital Student ID Card, iPASS Kaohsiung Student ID Card or Children Card to encourage students to go to school by transportation equipment that is more environmentally-friendly and convenient. The number of daily student users has increased from more than 3,000 at the early stage to 6,000.
