Trial Operations of Emergency Vehicle Pre-emption Signals at the Four Junctions of Fengding Road for Emergency Purposes

(Kaohsiung) “Premier in Kaohsiung,” the trial operations of emergency vehicle pre-emption signals with the technology of Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is conducted at the four junctions of Fengding Road in Kaohsiung to switch the traffic lights into green at the junctions when ambulances are passing through to shorten the transportation time of emergency vehicles at those parts of the roads.

The Transportation Bureau, Kaohsiung City expressed that during the transportation process of emergency vehicles although they will alert people with siren and siren light, communicating the message to give way, they may catch in traffic accidents with road users coming from the opposite directions when passing traffic lights. It will not only delay rescue missions but also cause further accidents.

In collaborating with the Fire Department, the Transportation Bureau set up emergency vehicle pre-emption signals at the four junctions of Fengding/Guopi, Fengding/Baosheng, Fengding/Guoxiong, and Fengding/Dingzhuang Roads. On the fire engines and ambulances of Fengxiang Fire Station, IoV devices are installed on a trial basis. When emergency vehicles are approaching the junctions, they will signal the traffic lights for the signal of priority access to ensure a green light for emergency vehicles and a red light for other vehicles for safety passing.

The advantage of the IoV system is that it can avoid other vehicles to stop and wait at the junctions without giving emergency vehicle priority access. With the control of the signal, it can also reduce the chances of a car crash when emergency vehicles passing the traffic lights rapidly so that they can arrive at their destinations safely and smoothly.

The Transportation Bureau said the system started operating in October 2021. According to the preliminary analysis, it can reduce 28% of the time when emergency vehicles passing through those road sections. Now, the longest distance for rescue is 15 minutes of driving in most precincts of the fire brigades. The system can help shorten the driving time to allow emergency vehicles to arrive at the locations of the cases at the earliest possible time.
