Kaohsiung Completes Accessibility Improvements of All of Its Off-street Parking Lots

【Kaohsiung News】 To improve the service quality of off-street parking lots in Kaohsiung City and to enable people with disabilities or mobility impairment to access parking lots more safely and operate parking pay stations more easily, the Transportation Bureau followed the instruction of Mayor Chen Chi-mai and completed the accessibility improvements of over 1,000 public and private off-street parking lots that are legally operated in Kaohsiung City by the end of March.

Paying great attention to the access safety and payment convenience of people with disabilities, Mayor Chen instructed the Transportation Bureau to improve the accessibility of all off-street parking lots.

After six months of promotion and efforts, the Transportation Bureau has completed the inspection and improvement of accessibility of over 1,000 public and private off-street parking lots that are legally operated across the city.

The Transportation Bureau even inspected each of the nearly 1,000 privately operated parking lots to see if there were accessible ramps for people with disabilities, if there were height differences between unmanned parking pay stations and the ground, and if the pay stations were too high.

Director-General Chang Shu-chuan said that under the instruction of Mayor Chen, the Transportation Bureau started the accessibility improvements of all off-street parking lots from October last year. The Bureau inspected each of the existing legal parking lots and completed the accessibility improvements of over 1,000 legal parking lots across the city in six months.

The Transportation Bureau particularly invited Commissioner Wang Tao-peng of the Advocacy Group for the Protection of the Rights of People with Disabilities to conduct random site inspections of the improved parking lots. After the site inspections, Mr. Wang recognized the quality of the overall accessibility improvements of those legal parking lots. He also suggested and expected that the Transportation Bureau would continue to provide considerate services.
