Kaohsiung City Government Established Traffic Accident Prevention Group to Better Prevent Traffic Accidents

To better prevent traffic accidents, the Kaohsiung City Government established the Traffic Accident Prevention Group, which is tasked with coordinating prevention measures by integrating city and central government efforts to reduce traffic accidents and improve traffic efficiency.
With the objective of improving traffic safety in Kaohsiung City, Mayor Chen Chi-mai announced the establishment of the Traffic Accident Prevention Group in a municipal meeting a few days ago, vowing to promote prevention measures through cross-divisional efforts. Deputy Secretary-general Wang Chi-chuan is appointed to serve as the convener of the Group, which consists of such local and central units as the Police Department, Public Work Bureau, Transportation Bureau of the Kaohsiung City Government, the Directorate General of Highways (Ministry of Transportation and Communications), and Construction and Planning Agency (Ministry of the Interior). All will involve in the coordinated and integrated efforts to implement prevention measures for accident-prone locations.
During its first meeting on October 8, Secretary-general Wang, the convener of the Traffic Accident Prevention Group, said that the group was in charge of such tasks as keeping track of prevention programs for accident-prone locations, coordinating related law enforcement measures, and promoting road improvement works for safer road environments.
The group discussed the projects at two accident-prone locations. A divisional island improvement construction project will be carried out at the roundabout at the Zhonghua and Wufu Intersection in Xinxing District. The project is intended to simplify scooter routes by allowing scooter riders, who at present must follow the outer ring of the roundabout, to directly ride through the intersection, so as to reduce crash risks.
For the project at the Jiaxin East and Chenggong Intersection in Gangshan District, the group invited the Traffic Bureau, Public Work Bureau and Directorate General of Highways to assess the feasibility of adding a divisional island at the off-bridge section. Traffic signs and road markings will also be adjusted to improve the safety at the oblique intersection.
The Traffic Bureau pointed out that  road environment, pedestrians and vehicles have something to do with the occurrence of traffic accidents. In response, the city government will strengthen the 3E strategy (engineering, enforcement and education) and apply smart technologies to reduce traffic accidents. It will also promote cross-divisional cooperation for better effectiveness.
