Kaohsiung City has the Highest Transportation Diversity in Taiwan; “Kaohsiung iBus”App Makes Bus Riding More Convenient

Kaohsiung News The means of public transportation in Kaohsiung include MRT, buses, ferries, LRT, taxis, shared e-scooters, public bikes, etc., making the city with the highest transportation diversity in Taiwan. The “Kaohsiung iBus Real-Time Bus Arrival Information” app launched by Kaohsiung City has gained recognition and support from citizens.

Together with the Director-General of the Transportation Bureau Chang Shu-Chuan and the Director-General of the Information Bureau Dong Jian-Hong, Deputy Mayor Lin Cin-Rong held the press conference on “Kaohsiung City Real-Time Bus Arrival Information and Bus Riding Experience” on August 28. Lin Cin-Rong stated that the Real-Time Bus Arrival Information System in Kaohsiung City was set up in 2010 and has been online since then. The iBus mobile app that provides access to real-time bus information has been downloaded over 4,000 times per month, with 260,000 daily users.

Lin Cin-Rong further stated that the public transportation in Kaohsiung includes the MRT system; a bus network of 169 routes; LRT, a notable city feature of Kaohsiung and runs through Asia New Bay Area; the new generation of YouBike 2.0 system that provides bike-sharing service currently at 586 locations with 5,800 bikes; and the MRT Yellow Line that has already been in the comprehensive planning process. The Kaohsiung City Government is proactively promoting city transformation and continues to spare no effort to create a human-oriented transportation environment.

Chang Shu-Chuan pointed out that the “Kaohsiung iBus Real-Time Bus Arrival Information” app has several functions, including “Bus Route and Real-Time Information,” “Trip Planning,” “Service Information,” “Arrival Reminder,” and “Taxi-Bus.” Users can also save items such as personalized routes and stops to “Favorite” so they can quickly retrieve routes and stops they are interested in. Download the “Kaohsiung iBus” app and gain access to accurate and real-time bus arrival information. In addition, 832 LED tickers providing real-time bus arrival information are installed at bus stops in Kaohsiung City.

Kaohsiung City integrated its various means of transportation and offers discounts on the MeNGo monthly transportation pass. The discount applies to four types of monthly passes, namely, “Unlimited Rides” (for MRT, LRT, and buses), “Unlimited Rides on Buses,” “Unlimited Rides on Buses and Intercity Buses,” and “Unlimited Rides on Ferries,” in which discount amounts vary from NT$200 to NT$249. Monthly pass holders may get up to 50% off depending on the type of pass purchased. Moreover, they can earn 200~600 MeNGo Points. The Bureau aims to optimize its services by integrating transportation means through MeNGo monthly pass. 

MeNGo monthly pass has seen a growth in usage despite the pandemic, showing that a service integrating multiple means of transport is a favored option. Therefore, the Kaohsiung City Government decided to offer MeNGo monthly pass users discounts to ease their financial burden. This measure also helps reduce environmental pollution and traffic accidents caused by the use of private vehicles and create a safe and convenient transportation environment.

The Transportation Bureau encourages citizens to purchase the pass. MeNGo card is a physical smart card in which iPASS is integrated with. Currently, a limited quota to apply for the card free of charge is offered. Citizens may apply online to save wait times and pay through credit cards or LINE Pay money.
