Shuttle Taxi Real-time Information System Receives Smart City Innovative Application Award

“Like!” The Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government launched the first Shuttle Taxi Real-time Information System in Taiwan, which enables citizens to have better bus riding experiences. The service received 2019 Smart City Innovative Application Award and was handed out by Vice President Chen Chien-jen at the opening ceremony of 2019 Smart City Expo. The award was then presented to Mayor Han Kuo-yu by Director-general of the Transportation Bureau, Cheng Yung-Hsiang, at the Municipal Administrative Meeting on April 30.

Mayor Han pointed out that Kaohsiung City is the first city to launch shuttle taxi service in Taiwan in order to solve the problem of lack of public transport in remote areas. The city is also the first to include shuttle taxi in real-time bus information system. The Kaohsiung i-bus real-time information system integrates relevant real-time information and booking feature, which is convenient and time-saving for citizens to check service routes and status by cellphones before leaving the house. In addition, the Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government is able to use back-end monitoring system to check bus status and conduct monitoring and auditing, which helps not only maintain riding quality but also build citizens’ trust in public transport and their willingness to use the service.

Mayor Han further stated that the shuttle taxi service team currently consists of 45 vehicles, running service in 25 routes throughout 21 administrative districts. On March 16, a hospital service route was launched in Yanchao District to serve residents at Ren-ai Senior Citizens' Home; on April 15, the shuttle service was extended to Jhongliao Village, Cishan District where public bus service had not been provided in more than 20 years. The shuttle taxi service is continuing to assist with the implementation of social welfare policies and gradually expanding its service scope to benefit local residents. Meanwhile, the city government cooperated with technology companies and launched real-time information system to introduce intelligent transportation system, which then received wide recognition. The city government is certain that citizens will see its hard work!

Director-general of the Transportation Bureau, Cheng Yung-Hsiang, stated that comparing to bus service, shuttle taxi service can help reduce subsidy expenditure by roughly 30%, which amounts to about NT$5 million. Also, the shuttle taxi service is better than the bus in that it not only provides service on a set schedule, but also offers booking service so the citizens can have a more flexible transport choice. The shuttle taxi continues to improve its service by adding stops and introducing booking feature in mobile app, and expand its service scope by scaling up its vehicles and increasing service routes to serve senior residents in remote areas. At the same time, by encouraging more drivers to join the service team and therefore improving efficiency in dispatching vehicles, the Bureau aims to the service quality in various aspects, including optimizing service, reducing subsidy expenditure, and increasing ridership.
